Blackwell Church Preservation Association
In 1859, the United Methodists first held services in a one room schoolhouse, located just outside of town. This practice continued for 33 years before the community decided to build a dedicated house of worship. In 1892 a local family donated one acre of land in the center of town. The community built a 28 x 40 foot church building on this site at a cost of one thousand dollars. This was the first church built in Morris Township. The first service was held on October 23, 1892
Facing a declining membership, the Methodists sold the Blackwell Church property for $1 to the newly formed, non-profit, Blackwell Church Preservation Association in 2005 with the stipulation that it be used for non-commercial community or religious events, a use that continues to this day. In 2013, the structure was placed on the National Register of Historic Places referencing the Victorian Stick Gothic architecture and local design and craftsmanship. Some maintenance and repair work has been done, most notably in 2009 the old brick chimney was removed and a new roof was installed with funds provided by the community.
The interior is in good condition. We are currently renovating the exterior of the building. A carpentry team has repaired the steeple, front porch and replaced some siding and trim. We have also contracted to have the exterior prepared and repainted. We anticipate this project will cost $25000 and with a completion date in 2024.
